Personal Profile

My interests span across highly contrasting areas, from slip casting with porcelain and bone china, to hand building and more dirty techniques such as Raku and Naked Raku firings. I feel very passionate about clay and am intrigued by its virtually limitless possibilities and wide range of processes that can be used.

At present my work is based on the idea of giving a contemporary twist to a traditional idea. Pieces tend to be functional with an aim to create unique design features. My most recent ceramics are slip cast and fired using the alternative technique Raku, which originated from 16th Century Japan. This involves taking the glowing ceramics out of the hot kiln and placing it into a bed of sawdust; creating fire resulting in beautiful smoke stained surfaces and lustrous glazes. It is a technique that I have a great passion for, due to the process, the results created and philosophy behind the technique.
